Frosty Mod Manager Issues and Troubleshooting

Use this guide when Frosty Mod Manager will not open, cannot find a game, fails to launch through the EA App or Steam, or applies mods without changing the game.

Quick checks before troubleshooting

  1. Close the game, Frosty Mod Manager, and any game launcher that is stuck in the background.
  2. Extract the complete Frosty archive into its own empty folder. Do not run the program from inside the ZIP file.
  3. Confirm that your Frosty version, game profile, and mods support the same game and game update.
  4. Enable one mod in the active pack and test it by itself.
  5. Launch the game from Frosty Mod Manager instead of using the normal desktop or launcher shortcut.
  6. Record the full error message and check Errors.txt before changing multiple settings.

Frosty Mod Manager will not open or crashes at startup

Startup failures often happen when the download was only partly extracted, Windows blocked one of the files, a required file was moved, or the selected Frosty build does not support the current setup.

Steps to try

  1. Create a new empty folder and extract every file and subfolder from the Frosty archive into it.
  2. Keep the executable, DLL files, plugins, and supporting folders together. Do not copy only the main executable.
  3. If the archive came from a source you trust, open its Windows Properties before extracting and check whether an Unblock option is present.
  4. Move the extracted folder to a normal writable location with a short path. Avoid running it from a temporary folder, cloud-only folder, or inside the protected game directory.
  5. Restart Windows to clear a hidden Frosty or game process, then try the clean folder again.
  6. Open Errors.txt, if it was created, and use the first specific error rather than only the final crash message.
Security note: Do not disable antivirus protection to make Frosty run. Check whether a file was quarantined and restore it only after confirming that the download is trusted.

Frosty Mod Manager does not detect the game

Frosty needs a matching game profile and access to the installed game files. A launcher shortcut is not the same as the actual game executable.

Steps to try

  1. Start the unmodded game normally once, reach its main menu, and close it. This lets the launcher finish first-run setup.
  2. Use Frosty's game scan or add-game option again.
  3. If you select a file manually, choose the actual game executable in the installation folder rather than the EA App, Steam, or Epic Games launcher.
  4. Check that the game has a supported Frosty profile. Frostbite-based does not automatically mean that every title or every build is supported.
  5. Verify or repair the game through its store launcher if the executable or installation files are missing.

Mods do not appear or Frosty reports an import error

A mod may be packaged for another manager, another Frosty version, or a different game. Downloads opened directly from a browser or archive preview can also appear to Frosty as incomplete files.

Steps to try

  1. Save the download to a local folder before importing it. Do not drag a file directly from a browser download panel or archive preview.
  2. If the download contains instructions, screenshots, or several optional versions, extract it first and identify the intended .fbmod file.
  3. Keep any companion archive file supplied with an .fbmod in the same folder during import.
  4. Confirm that the mod was created for the selected game and is compatible with your Frosty Mod Manager version.
  5. Remove the failed entry from Frosty, download a fresh copy, and import only that mod before adding anything else.

Frosty launches the game but mods are not applying

If the game opens normally without the expected changes, first confirm the selected pack and then rebuild Frosty's generated deployment data.

Steps to try

  1. Make sure the mod is installed, added to the Applied Mods list, and enabled in the pack you are currently using.
  2. Remove every other mod and test one simple, game-version-compatible mod.
  3. Start the game with the Launch button inside Frosty Mod Manager.
  4. Close Frosty and the game. Find the generated ModData folder beside the game files and rename it to ModData-backup.
  5. Open Frosty, apply the mod again, and allow it to create fresh deployment data.
  6. If the clean test works, restore mods a few at a time until the incompatible or conflicting mod is identified.
Keep a backup: Renaming ModData is safer than deleting it. Do not rename or remove folders from the original game installation unless you know they were generated by Frosty.

EA App, Steam, or Epic Games launch problems

Some games use more than one launcher. Frosty must use the platform that owns the game while that launcher is signed in and able to start the unmodded game.

Steps to try

  1. Open the game's normal launcher, sign in, confirm the game starts without mods, and then close the game.
  2. In Frosty's options, select the correct launch platform for that installation.
  3. Run Frosty and the launcher at the same Windows privilege level. Normally, both should run without administrator elevation.
  4. End duplicated or frozen launcher processes in Task Manager, reopen the launcher, and launch through Frosty.
  5. If you use a separate data-path or launch helper, use only the method required for your platform. Stacking multiple launch fixes can cause a new conflict.
  6. Remove custom command-line arguments temporarily and test the default launch path.

Mod conflicts, crashes, and load-order issues

Two mods can edit the same game asset even when they change different-looking features. A game that launches with one mod but fails with a full pack usually has a conflict or an outdated mod.

Find the conflicting mod

  1. Create a new test pack and apply one known-compatible mod.
  2. Add half of the remaining mods and test again. If the problem returns, the conflict is in that half.
  3. Continue testing smaller groups until one mod or combination reproduces the problem.
  4. Remove duplicate variants of the same mod and keep only the version designed for your current game update.
  5. When two mods change the same asset, adjust their applied order only if the mod authors provide load-order guidance.

Frosty is stuck applying mods or runs very slowly

Applying mods can take longer when Frosty is building new deployment data, processing large texture or mesh mods, or working on a slow or nearly full drive.

Steps to try

  1. Allow the first application attempt to finish and watch for disk activity before forcing Frosty to close.
  2. Check that the game drive and Windows system drive both have free space.
  3. Test one small mod to separate a general write problem from a large or damaged mod package.
  4. Use a local, writable Frosty folder and avoid cloud-only files that must download while Frosty is running.
  5. Check Windows Security history for quarantined Frosty or mod files without disabling protection.
  6. Rebuild ModData using the backup method above if the process repeatedly stops at the same point.

Frosty mods stopped working after a game update

A game patch can change assets, executable data, or the profile information Frosty uses. Old deployment data may then fail even though it worked before the update.

Recovery order

  1. Disable Frosty mods and verify that the unmodded game still launches.
  2. Repair the game in its launcher if the base game also fails.
  3. Rename the old ModData folder and let Frosty create a new one.
  4. Test one mod confirmed to support the updated game build.
  5. Check whether your Frosty build includes an updated profile for the game.
  6. Reintroduce the remaining mods gradually; mods made for older game data may need an author update.

Information to collect when the problem continues

Good diagnostic details make a Frosty Mod Manager problem much easier to reproduce. Save the following information before reinstalling or changing more files:

  • The exact Frosty Mod Manager version.
  • The game, store platform, game version, and Windows version.
  • The full error message and relevant contents of Errors.txt.
  • The exact steps that caused the issue.
  • Whether Frosty worked before and what changed.
  • Whether one mod works alone, plus the full list of applied mods.
  • Any plugins, launch helpers, command-line arguments, or custom paths in use.
  • Whether the entire Frosty archive was extracted into a clean folder.
Protect your privacy: Review logs before sharing them. Remove account names, personal paths, tokens, or other private information that is not needed to diagnose the error.

Frosty Mod Manager FAQ

Why will Frosty Mod Manager not open?

An incomplete extraction, blocked files, a missing dependency, or an incompatible Frosty build can prevent startup. Extract the entire archive into a new folder, keep every included file together, and check Errors.txt for the exact failure.

Why are my Frosty mods not applying?

Confirm the mods are enabled in the active pack and launch the game through Frosty Mod Manager. Test one compatible mod, then rebuild the generated ModData deployment if the game still opens without changes.

Is it safe to remove the Frosty ModData folder?

ModData is generated deployment data, but renaming it to ModData-backup is safer than deleting it. Frosty can generate a fresh folder when mods are applied again, and the backup can be restored if needed.

Can Frosty Mod Manager launch games from the EA App or Steam?

Frosty includes launch-platform support. Select the platform that owns the game, sign in to that launcher, keep Frosty and the launcher at the same Windows privilege level, and start the game from Frosty.

What should I do after a game update breaks Frosty mods?

First verify that the unmodded game starts. Then create fresh ModData, test one mod, and confirm that the Frosty profile and each mod support the updated game build.

Does reinstalling Frosty reset every setting?

Not always. Some Frosty configuration is stored outside the application folder, so extracting another copy may leave existing settings in place. Test a clean folder first and back up configuration before resetting it.
